Cancelled Game Consoles
Starting off we have the Sega Neptune. This was a planned hybrid system combining the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and the 32X add-on into a single unit. It was cancelled because the Sega Saturn was ready to launch along with the fact that SEGA and Hardware add-ons did not mesh well together.
While we’re discussing Sega, up next is the Sega Pluto. After the Sega Saturn launched, a prototype variant of the system was made with a built-in Netlink dial-up modem. Only two units were ever made before Sega pulled the plug to focus on the Dreamcast. Not the best track record of Sega’s, explains why they had to step down from console development.
Next up is the Atari Cosmos, a cancelled tabletop/handheld developed between 1978 and 1981. It is famously remembered for attempting to bring "holographic" 3D gaming into the home, a marketing claim that was heavily overstated despite generating 8,000 pre-orders leading up to its abrupt cancellation.
Moving on we have the Panasonic M2. One of the most powerful yet tragic "what-ifs" in gaming. It had impressive specs for the time and even outperformed the N64. But despite ambitions, it simply bit off more than it could chew and it was cancelled. But the tech used for it went to other high-end commercial and industrial equipment.
Last but definitely not least we have the infamous Nintendo PlayStation. We covered this system before but long story short, Nintendo & Sony formed a partnership to create a CD-Based SNES and even showcased it in 1991. But as most of us know, Nintendo would back out to partner with Philips and Sony would make Nintendo’s biggest competitor that would beat them out time and time again. What a timeline we live in.
