A trade standoff between the U.S. and Canada has deepened after Ottawa pulled out of trade talks late Friday, accusing Washington of making last-minute demands. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney claimed the U.S. wanted to restrict Canada's ability to negotiate trade agreements with other countries, leading to a missed deadline. Carney says: "We cannot accept what they've offered, and we will not give what they've asked." As a result, 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of imports took effect Saturday, while Canada has vowed to retaliate dollar-for-dollar.
In response to the tension, Greer says: "We've taken counter-measures. Our interest is in protecting American workers and protecting American supply chains .... They've always had the best deal and they would still have an even better deal, but they didn't want that." Meanwhile, President Trump says: "Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!!" President Trump announced Monday that U.S. tariffs on all Canadian cars and trucks will increase to 50% on January 1st.
Supporters and critics remain divided over the relationship. Duffy says: "The fact that we provide their security for them and they take advantage of us, I think President Trump was the first one to go, you know what, that's not the kind of relationship that friends should have." However, Democrats warn that losing allies carries severe risks, with Quigley saying: "If we can't even get along with Canada, a low-hanging fruit here, who can we get along with?" The U.S. Trade Representative says no new talks are planned with the Canadians, but insists it was not the U.S. that made last-minute demands.
