On January 28, 1986, millions of Americans gathered around television screens to watch the launch of the space shuttle Challenger, which carried the first civilian into space, a schoolteacher named Christa McAuliffe. Just 73 seconds after liftoff from Cape Canaveral, the spacecraft broke apart in midair, taking the lives of all seven crew members.
