Social Media for autistic people has become a way to be able to interact with other like-minded people, share autism experiences and find comfort & valid. Despite the positives, there are dangers to using social media that can leave people with autism vulnerable.

Social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc give autistic people the opportunity to explore whatever their heart desires. With my autism, in particular, I have an obsessive and addictive personality and when I'm online, I feel the need to be on all of the time. It is incredibly easy for someone on the autism spectrum to become hooked to social media and forget about the real world. Now autistic people may turn to social media to cope and I've done this alot. It's extremely easy to become addicted to social media.

Some autistic people may not understand what people's intentions are & are again vulnerable to social media. The other scary thing about these online sites is that you can pretend to be anyone online i.e. fake profiles. Which can lead some people with autism into a false sense of security as we like to see the best of others.

Social media sometimes can become a place of bullying, victimization and harassment which I've experienced first time on social media. Autistic people are a lot more vulnerable and can be intimidating by others. The dangers of social media are very much real but I think social media use correctly in a safe way can be a great experience for autistic people.
