Can Israel truly defeat Iran? After decades of shadow warfare, the conflict between the two states has erupted into full-scale war. Israeli airstrikes have devastated key military and nuclear sites, eliminated senior Iranian leaders, and reportedly secured air dominance over Tehran. Yet despite these decisive military gains, the path to lasting strategic victory remains uncertain. The war has exposed the limits of force in achieving long-term political outcomes. While Iran is reeling, its nuclear programme may still survive, and its network of proxies—though weakened—continues to pose a threat across the region. Military dominance does not automatically translate into lasting security.
The roots of this conflict stretch back to the 1979 Iranian Revolution, which transformed once-close ties into a bitter ideological rivalry. Iran’s nuclear ambitions, regional influence through groups like Hezbollah and Hamas, and Israel’s red lines have driven years of escalating tension. With Syria’s Assad regime toppled and proxy battles intensifying, direct confrontation has now reached unprecedented levels. Yet even with battlefield supremacy, Israel faces limited and deeply problematic options: destroy Iran’s nuclear capability, return to negotiations, seek peace, or pursue regime change. Each carries enormous risks and uncertain outcomes. The question now is not whether Israel can win the war—but whether it can win the peace.
