A Bactrian camel at the San Francisco Zoo was filmed gulping water directly from a hose. Bactrius Maximus II eagerly hydrated as keeper Mary held the hose for him.
Bactrian camels can drink up to 15 gallons of water in one sitting, the equivalent of more than 100 standard water bottles. Some especially thirsty camels can consume roughly 30 gallons in about 10 minutes.
Despite a common misconception, camels do not store water in their humps; the humps store fat that can be converted into energy when food is scarce. Their bodies are adapted to conserve water and quickly replace fluids after spending long periods in dry environments.
