Retro365 | Calixto Island - Mark Data Products, 1984 - IBM PC (4K) @Retro365 | Uploaded November 2023 | Updated October 2024, 1 day ago.
A playthrough of Calixsto Island, published by Mark Data Products for the IBM PC in 1984.
Calixsto Island was originally written by Ron Krebs and published by Mark Data Products as a text-only game for the TRS-80 CoCo in 1981. Krebs was clearly inspired by the many text-only adventure games of the late '70s and early '80s, like Scott Adams' adventure titles.
When Mark Data started distributing the graphical adventure games of Stephen O'Dea and Bob Withers, the two redid Krebs' game with graphics and animation.
Compared to contemporary 1981 titles, Calixto Island plays well albeit with a somewhat weak storyline and relatively few locations. In 1984, along with the IBM PC version, which looked great, Sierra On-Line released its first title in its long-running King's Quest series, setting completely new standards for the adventure game genre, turning games like Calixto Island more or less obsolete overnight.
