Little is published in both the academic and lay literature about the ties between Spiritism, women, and colonialism. However, Puerto Rican women as practitioners of Spiritism, helped transform Puerto Rican society during its disruptive colonial transition from Spain to the United States. Join Rooted + Relational faculty presider, Jillian Baez, and author Dr. Clara Román Odio, as they explore the role of feminism and spirituality in Puerto Rican politics, culture, and society through Román Odio’s books, Spiritist Women in Puerto Rico (1880-1920) (2022) and Memorias de mi Espíritu (2024).
Founded in 1973 by a coalition of students, faculty, and activists, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College (CENTRO) is the largest university-based research institute, library, and archive dedicated to the Puerto Rican experience in the United States.
