The CAC 40 is heading for a third straight weekly decline as France's widening budget deficit and stalling growth weigh on French bank stocks.
Fiona Cincotta, StoneX Senior Market Analyst, walks through the fiscal, political and technical backdrop shaping the CAC 40 and French banks.
French gross domestic product data showed the economy losing momentum, adding pressure on a government already carrying one of the largest budget deficits in Europe and more than 3.5 trillion euros of public debt. Investors are also watching Fitch's latest assessment of France's sovereign rating, after the yield on the ten year Italian government bond traded below the French equivalent for much of the summer. That reversal places France, rather than Italy, at the center of the debate over European debt sustainability.
