The only requirement is you have to only use flat earth mathematics, you can't use any reference to the globe. The money is in escrow and waiting for a lucky flerf to use the flat earth to find the locations where the sights were taken. No flerf has met the challenge yet, and only one tried, but used a sphere to do his calculations.As proof that the challenge is real and the money is available, McToon offered $100 in bit coin to the first one to use any method (including the globe) to find where he took three star sights with a basic app on his phone. Building a Pier Mount | The Design ResearchFlatMoon 2022-02-16 | Moving toward the technology side of science, today we start the build of two leveling mounts for the telescope piers. This will enable me to permanently mount the telescopes and do a fine polar alignment for astrophotography.In this series we'll head out to the garage and do some metal fabrication for the leveling mounts we design. We'll learn to cut metal, build and level the mount, dealing with the problems and challenges of working with the two main kinds of telescope mounts- the Alt/Az with an equatorial edge and a German Equatorial Mount.In this episode we look at the needs of the mount and work out the design. Finding the Radius of the Earth with the Moon ResearchFlatMoon 2022-01-17 | 'You're Gonna Need R for That!!!'. How often have we heard that from science deniers?In the last few months, I've gone over a number of ways to determine the radius of the earth. 1/ The Method of Eratosthenes- This method uses the shadow cast by the sun at its zenith. Refraction is minimal, and by using three points we not only find the radius of the earth, we effectively rule out the flat earth.2/ The Method of Al Biruni- By measuring the dip angle to the horizon from a known elevation, we can use basic trigonometry to find the radius of the earth. We do have an issue with refraction, but we still get the radius within 2-3% and we can correct for it.3/ Great Circle Distances between known coordinates with confirmation of the actual distance between those points. With this we rule out the possibility of a flat earth and confirm the radius of the earth.In this video we introduce two new methods:4/ Aristarchus of Samos worked out the geometry to use common observations (specifically observations of the lunar eclipse and the angular size of the full moon) to determine the distance to the moon in terms of the radius of the earth and the size of the earth in terms of the size of the moon. By solving these values with radar, laser and parallax determinations of the distance to the moon, we can determine the size (radius of the sphere) of the earth.5/ Kepler's Third Law- by using the distance and period of the orbit of the moon and the period and the altitude of the orbit of the ISS. Subtracting the 400km altitude of the ISS from the resulting radius of the orbit of the ISS we can determine the radius of the earth.Note, at the end of the video, I have the orbital distance to the moon for all dates in 2022. With the sextant, is there an adjacent side, much less a bendy one?The thumbnail is another example of angular size, using your hand as a guide to measure the angular size of objects in the sky. Next full moon see if if you can use your little finger to estimate its angular size (hand at arm's length). Great Circles and Science Denial ResearchFlatMoon 2021-12-27 | FE Scholar Brian's Logic decided to 'challenge' me in a video the other day on the Haversine Equation, Formula and Great Circle Distances. Unfortunately he has no more understanding of Great Circles than he did of Gyrocompasses. We go over straight line vs great circle distances in this video and I correct Brian on the Haversine Formula and its' uses. Otis the Cat and Little Missy helped with the video. NOTE CORRECTION::::Michael pointed out a math error I made. When doing the Law of Cosines to determine the distance between Perth and Sydney, I made an error and reported the distance as 3.51 inches. It is actually 3.87 inches which compares well with the 3.85 inches I measured. The flat earth distance is over 4400 NM, the Haversine gave it as 1777 NM and the actual distance is 1778 NM.
