Savage attacks begin to happen to those in the orbit of Angus Macbane, descendant of a Scottish warlock, in this hard-to-find short story by Adrian Ross (aka Arthur Reed Ropes, aka Stephen Hall) from 1887.

"By One, By Two and By Three" was included in the Second Pan Book of Horror Stories (1960) edited by Herbert Van Thal, and adapted for an episode of Rod Serling's Night Gallery as 'There Aren't Any More MacBanes'.

It is read by Jasper L'Estrange with sound effects and music for the EnCrypted Classic Horror Podcast.
