Gina-B Silkworks | Button Autopsy - What is a four fold button anyway? Looking inside machine made linen wash buttons @GinaBSilkworks | Uploaded August 2022 | Updated October 2024, 11 hours ago.
In this video I'm taking a look at the linen wash button. This unassuming button was one of the culprits that ended the Dorset button industry. Machine made quickly, yet still could be washed and put through the mangle without being damaged, it is easy to see why these inexpensive buttons would be so popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Carded buttons show all sorts of claims - and today I'll explore the "four fold" button. Four fold, can mean a number of things - literally fabric folded four times, but also fabric made of thread that has been "folded" before spinning four times. This exercise is to discover why a button was advertised as four-fold. And to hopefully make a conclusion as to why others were advertised as three fold and even two fold.
I'll be taking a look at the following brands - The Princess, Britton Buttons & West End buttons, as well as a button not on a card.
Please note - I mention finding cutter to try to cut through, I wasn't able to!
