The Butterfly People of Joplin are the most documented mass angel encounter in modern American history. During the May 22, 2011 Joplin tornado, an EF5 that killed 161 people and destroyed 900 homes, dozens of unrelated children began telling the same impossible story. They described beautiful winged beings descending from the sky, covering them with their wings, shielding them from flying debris, and in some accounts steering the storm itself away from where they hid.
What makes this case so hard to dismiss is the consistency. Small children of different ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds, interviewed separately by Red Cross counselors and trauma clinicians who had never compared notes, all described colorful humanlike figures hovering in a protective way. A few parents saw them too. A former skeptical newspaper reporter investigated the accounts and could not explain them away. The town later raised a historical marker to the Butterfly People, and murals of them still cover Joplin today.
In this investigation we walk through the firsthand testimonies of survivors like Mason Lillard and Eli Morgan, the pastor whose congregation reported the same beings, and the published record that mainstream coverage left out.
