Butchart Gardens are located in the site of a former limestone quarry. When the quarry was depleted in 1909 Robert and Jennie Butchart had Isaburo Kishida build their garden on the site.
Isaburo Kishida was from Yokohama and had built a Japanese Tea Garden in the Esquilmalt Gorge Park in 1907. His garden was so popular that many well to do in Victoria had him make Japanese Gardens for them until he returned to Japan in 1912
It was first known as the Sunken Garden and completed in 1921 and thee first visitors started to come.
1926 saw the tennis courts removed and replaced with an Italian garden. 1929 saw the kitchen garden become a large rose garden designed by Butler Sturtevant.
In 1939 Robert and Jennie gave the gardens to their grandson Ian Ross who was 21. He remained invoed what the operations right through to his death in 1997.
