Canada declared war against Germany a week after the UK, France, Australia and New Zealand. Why did this happen? Mainly because Canada was asserting its' independence as a separate nation from Great Britain and it took a week to complete the process of declaring war.

On 3 September 1939, Prime Minister Robert Gordon Menzies announced that Australia was at war with Germany:
Fellow Australians, it is my melancholy duty to inform you officially, that in consequence of a persistence by Germany in her invasion of Poland, Great Britain has declared war upon her and that, as a result, Australia is also at war. No harder task can fall to the lot of a democratic leader than to make such an announcement.
NEW ZEALAND
Acting prime minister, Peter Fraser, issued a statement confirming that New Zealand was at war:
This is not an occasion for many words; it is a dark day in the history of the world … It is with deep regret and sadness that I make this announcement on behalf of the Government, and the people will receive it with similar feelings. That will not, however, affect the determination of both Government and people to play their part.
