We see some huge bus fires with massive jets of flames all the time in the media, but lets have a quick look at some.
In this video we look at some compressed natural gas (CNG) bus fires that had been claimed to be electric buses and these have unfortunately been misrepresented as examples of thermal runaway.
Emergency responders face numerous challenges, hazards and risks daily. When it comes to CNG, cylinders are designed with pressure relief valves that are temperature activated. If there is a fire or excessive heat impacting a cylinder, rather than having the cylinder fail dangerously and explode, the pressure relief valve is designed to fail at around 104c/219f. This can produce a sustained jet flame until the gas is burnt off and the pressure is relieved.
