The celebrate International Dog's Day, we thought we would take a moment to do what we do, looking at lithium-ion battery incidents that have unfortunately involved some unlucky dogs.
Please, we ask you to ensure that if you are lucky enough to have a dog share your house, that you take suitable steps to protect the dog from possibly finding any lithium-ion battery products. These could be anything from a mobile phone, a powerbank, a cordless toothbrush, anything that is powered by a lithium-ion battery. If your dog is to innocently chew on these, these videos show just how easy and just how fast, and just how dangerous the incident can be.
Always store your lithium-ion battery products in a safe and secure location where your dog is not able to access them.
These incidents are accidents, but these accidents are preventable and avoidable.

We see some huge bus fires with massive jets of flames all the time in the media, but lets have a quick look at some.
In this video we look at some compressed natural gas (CNG) bus fires that had been claimed to be electric buses and these have unfortunately been misrepresented as examples of thermal runaway.
Emergency responders face numerous challenges, hazards and risks daily. When it comes to CNG, cylinders are designed with pressure relief valves that are temperature activated. If there is a fire or excessive heat impacting a cylinder, rather than having the cylinder fail dangerously and explode, the pressure relief valve is designed to fail at around 104c/219f. This can produce a sustained jet flame until the gas is burnt off and the pressure is relieved.
If you would like to compare these CNG incidents to an actual electric bus fire that involved a large scale thermal runaway event, check out our Potters Bar video here - youtube.com/watch?v=tnNqBgOeCUQ

Have you heard of an electric vehicle catching fire twice? Or maybe multiple times?
Often when a lithium-ion battery pack goes into thermal runaway & ignites, not all the individual cells are completely destroyed. This means they are still live & may hold voltage weeks or months after the pack was burnt.
This is called stranded energy & it's why we sometimes see a secondary, or multiple ignition in LiB packs.
In this EV FireSafe Deep Dive video, we look at how stranded works & why it's dangerous for first responders, fire investigators & all secondary response businesses.

In this EV FireSafe EV Battery Fire Deep Dive video, we look at how many EVs have gone into thermal runaway leading to fire & break down what we know so far.
Thanks for watching & please subscribe for more EV battery fire incident analysis & data-driven learnings.

About the EV FireSafe research project EV FireSafe is a research project aiming to identify the risks to emergency responders when attending an electric vehicle (EV) lithium traction battery fire, particularly where that vehicle is connected to energised charging. We are proudly funded by the Australian Department of Defence, with assistance from Deakin University. See more or get in touch at evfiresafe.comHow to isolate an EV battery for emergency respondersEV FireSafe2022-08-18 | Road rescuers globally are encountering more electric vehicles involved in collisions where the driver or passengers need extrication.
While very low, the risk of electrocution from cutting into an EV is real. Isolating the high voltage traction battery in an EV de-energises the high voltage cables & components located around the vehicle, making it safer to work around.
Unfortunately, there's no standardisation across EV manufacturers on HOW to isolate the HV battery. So we took the opportunity at the recent EV Expo run by the @AEVANational in Canberra, to look at two ways.
Two responder tools, the CUT LOOP & PULL FUSE are low voltage connections that isolate high voltage systems. We also talk about the MANUAL SERVICE DISCONNECT PLUG, but this should only be used by trained mechanics as it's a direct connection to high voltage (in EVs, high voltage is over 60V & marked with orange conduit or stickers.
We've been working with the Victorian State Emergency Service & other Australian rescue agencies to start building a set of draft considerations for rescue responders when dealing with an EV, which can be downloaded here: evfiresafe.com/ev-extrication

Go to - https://evfiresafe-training.thinkific...Electric vehicle high voltage battery pack fire basics for emergency respondersEV FireSafe2022-04-05 | What's inside an EV battery pack & why do they catch fire?
An EV is powered by lithium ion battery cells; multiple cells make a battery module, & multiple modules make a battery pack. The pack sits underneath the vehicle, between the wheels.
If a battery cell is abused, it can short circuit & heat up, going into what's known as thermal runaway. Heat is dissipated into surrounding cells & eventually the pressure becomes too much & those cells burst, venting large clouds of toxic & flammable gases which may then ignite or, in a small number of incidents we researched, explode.
If you're an emergency responder, get ahead of electric vehicle technology by familiarising yourself with how battery packs are constructed, why they catch fire & what the signs of thermal runaway are with this short video.

But what happens to the AC or DC charging unit if an EV catches fire?
We wanted to help emergency responders better understand electric vehicle charging technology & how charging units will behave when they detect a fault as a vehicle goes into thermal runaway.
In this very short animation, we look at where an electrically compliant (RCM Tick in Australia) charging unit that is installed to standard (AS/NZ 3000) will cut power supply in that situation.
Please bear in mind that this is what we THINK will happen, but we're testing these theories later this year & will get back to you with the confirmed results!

Electric vehicle fires explained!EV FireSafe2022-03-18 | Are you an emergency responder? This is the MOST important video you can watch about electric vehicle battery fires!
Thermal runaway is how all electric vehicle battery fires start. We want to help emergency responders better understand what's happening inside an EV battery pack before a fire starts...but that can be tricky to explain!
In this very short animation, we look at how an electric vehicle battery pack is constructed, what happens when one of the lithium ion battery cells is abused & what you'll SEE & HEAR if a battery is in thermal runaway.

If you have EV charging at your commercial sites, work as a tow truck driver, in roadside assist, as a mechanic, car dealer, or vehicle transport, storage & wrecking, knowing the signs that an electric vehicle is about to catch fire is vital to your safety.
EV FireSafe has been researching electric vehicle battery fires & what they mean for emergency responders, both here in Australia & internationally. This work has been funded by the Department of Defence with assistance from Deakin University.
EV battery fires are very rare, but they pose new & challenging risks to emergency responders. We aim to provide data-driven learnings from past incidents from around the world, especially EV fires where the vehicle was connected to energised charging, to provide focus for future training.
This video is an introduction to our work & a high level look at what we've found.
