UCLA Anderson alumnus Steven Powell (B.S. ’00, ’10) oversees one of the nation’s largest utilities. Now president and CEO of Southern California Edison, Powell joined SCE in 2000. He has developed SCE’s long-term strategy, identifying and executing strategic projects, prioritizing technology development and integrated resource planning, and driving operational improvements. He has held leadership positions in the utility’s resource planning and strategy, gas and power procurement and SCE’s plug-in electric vehicle readiness efforts.
SCE serves approximately 15 million people in a 50,000 square-mile area of the state, encompassing 184 cities, 15 counties and 13 tribal nations. California has set goals for 90% clean electricity by 2035 and, by 2045, carbon-neutral state-wide. In a conversation on the UCLA campus with Dean Tony Bernardo, Powell talked about SCE’s role in achieving a carbon-neutral California, and building the grid of the future. In addition to renewables, among the most promising avenues to clean energy are geothermal sources and carbon capture and sequestration. Getting there will require acceleration of technology and new infrastructure. “Any of these are ten-plus-year investments,” Powell noted. “It can’t just be the state, it really takes national and global solutions.”
