Desensitization works best when your horse has the freedom to move.

That's why the tool matters. A lightweight, mobile object lets you stay with your horse if they try to move away, while still giving them the choice to move their feet.

The goal isn't to trap or restrain them. It's to let them discover that leaving doesn't make the scary thing disappear.
