signmetaphor | BSL poem "Tree" by Paul Scott @signmetaphor | Uploaded May 2015 | Updated October 2024, 8 hours ago.
Deaf poet Paul Scott's signed poem (in British Sign Language) "Tree" tells of the life cycle of a tree. It is a metaphor for the resistance of the deaf community. The poem shows good examples of anthropomorphism and cinematic signing with classifiers. It was performed at the Arnolfini Arts Centre in Bristol in September 2009.
The poems in this channel are part of the collection made as the University of Bristol Sign Language Poetry Anthology with the aim to study metaphor in sign language poetry. The poem is discussed in the book Introducing sign language literature folklore and creativity, by Rachel Sutton-Spence and Michiko Kaneko, published by Palgrave press. A full translation and commentary on the poem and its features is available at: signinghandsacrossthewater.files.wordpress.com/2015/09/paulscotttree.pdf
