The Brothers first album, “Look Out For #1” appeared in 1976 after beginning an association with Quincy Jones in 1975. That album reached #9 and #1 on the US R&B album chart.
The second album, “Right On Time” was released in 1977 and charted at #13 (#2 R&B). The album featured three singles, the most successful of which was “Strawberry Letter #23”, which made it to #5 on the Hot-100. The song was written and originally recorded by Johnny Otis’ son, Shuggie in 1971.
The Brothers kept going through the early 80s – “Stomp” was a #7 hit for them in 1980 – by which time they were more successful on the R&B chart than the Pop one.
“Strawberry Letter #23” was featured in the 1997 Quentin Tarantino film, “Jackie Browne”, starring Pam Grier.
