Berry Castle is a small Iron Age hilltop enclosure (formerly known as a hill fort) which is believed to be about 2600 years old, thus dated close to the assumed time of the Celtic invasions of Britain.
This type of ancient monument is rare with around 150 examples recorded in Britain and the majority occurring in North Devon and North Cornwall. They date to between the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age (eighth - fifth centuries BC) and examples which survive comparatively well and have potential for the recovery of archaeological remains are believed to be of national importance and are protected in law as Scheduled Monuments. This is clearly a military fortification but due to its prominent position in the landscape it is also likely to have been a symbol of power wielded by an elite over a populace.
