What is the future of British independent film?
The Culture, Media and Sport Committee are questioning industry figures and public funders of independent film in the UK.
James Hawes, director of One Life starring Anthony Hopkins, will be the sole witness on our first panel, and the Committee will be exploring how freelance directors can build a career in TV and film, how the US strikes have impacted the industry and what can be done to get even more productions filming across the whole of the UK.
Producer Rebecca O’Brien is then speaking with the Committee. O’Brien’s most recent film The Old Oak was made with her long-time collaborator Ken Loach, and was nominated for Outstanding British Film at this year’s BAFTAs. The Committee are likely to explore the domestic and global appetite for British film, the difficulties of raising finance as a British independent producer and how the UK Government can support future generations of independent filmmakers.
In the final panel, the Committee are questioning figures from two of the three main public funders of independent film in the UK: BBC Film and Film4. The Committee’s questioning may cover whether public funders show enough ambition to support British independent film and the financial pressures facing these funders.
