From an economic acronym to a major platform for emerging and developing economies, BRICS has come a long way since the term was coined in 2001.
The grouping began with Brazil, Russia, India and China, was institutionalised in 2006 and held its first summit in 2009. With South Africa joining in 2010, BRIC became BRICS. Over the years, the grouping expanded further, developing institutions such as the New Development Bank and broadening cooperation across politics and security, economy and finance, and people-to-people ties.
The Johannesburg Summit in 2023 marked another major milestone, paving the way for further expansion. Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE and Saudi Arabia joined in 2024, while Indonesia became a member in 2025. Several countries also joined as BRICS partner countries.
Now, with India holding the BRICS chairship in 2026, New Delhi is preparing to host the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12–13.
Under India's chairship, the focus is on resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability, with emphasis on practical, people-centric cooperation, resilient supply chains, technology, sustainable development and greater economic cooperation.
