Dr. Brian Mitzman, a general thoracic surgeon, sheds light on the transformative impact and potential of robotic-assisted surgery. Benefits of surgical robots include enhanced precision and visualization during the operation. They will allow doctors to safely perform complicated surgeries with increased efficiency, and even improve recovery for patients. Currently, the main robots used in surgical operations are the Intuitive da Vinci Surgical System (“Da Vinci”), used for larger operations, and the Intuitive ION Robotic Assisted Surgical System (“ION”), which can be used to identify and remove small tumors. Thoracic surgery is rapidly evolving, and as treatments and cure rates continue to improve, Dr. Mitzman envisions a future where it is no longer necessary to operate on patients.
