Flatoff is accused of taking hostages at gunpoint at Eagle Nation Cycles in Neenah in a dispute over a motorcycle. Neenah police officers stormed the building, triggering a shootout with Flatoff, before they retreated for cover.
Minutes later, Michael Funk — one of the hostages — ran from the building and was shot and killed without warning by officers Craig Hoffer and Robert Ross.
The criminal case has lingered in Winnebago County Circuit Court for more than two years as Flatoff went through 10 different public defenders. A few left on their own accord. The others were distrusted and discarded by Flatoff before he opted to proceed on his own.
