James Kalm is out on a foggy, drizzly Sunday afternoon to check out the latest offerings at some of the Lower East Side Galleries. The first stop is at Gavin Brown’s Enterprise and a glimpse at Brian Belott’s whimsical group of sculptures and paintings. Many of these works are engaged with technology though with a goofball primitive spin. Belott has an inventive use of found objects and color which he combines into inventive funky amalgams.
“Jane Dickson: Witness” at Steven Harvey is an intimate survey of work produced by the artist during the time she worked in a studio in Times Square in the late 1970s early 80s. Many of these scenes are nocturnal, painted on roughly textured black grounds, and capture pictures of this neighborhood and its denizens which have all but disappeared due to the pressures of gentrification and the more disturbing phenomena of Disney-afication.
Lastly we slip through “Holding Out For a Hero” the latest presentation of Paul Gagner at Freight+Volume. Gagner is a visual humorist, but never forgets his grounding as a painter.
