Brenda Nokuzola Fassie was born on 3 November 1964 in Langa, a township in Cape Town, South Africa, as the youngest of nine children. Her father died when she was about 2 years of age, and her mother, a pianist, played a significant role in her early exposure to music. Brenda began singing early on, earning money by performing for tourists and at church events. As a teenager (around 16), she left Cape Town for Soweto in Johannesburg to pursue a music career, and joined the vocal group “Joy” (who had a massive hit in South Africa with “Paradise Road” in 1980, reaching #1 on the Top 20 and charting for 19 weeks) when she filled in for Anneline Malebo while she was on maternity leave. She also provided backing vocals for the duo “Blondie & Pappa” until 1983, when she formed the band “Brenda & The Big Dudes”. Their first major hit was “Weekend Special” in 1983 which sold more than 200,000 copies in South Africa alone. The song also became popular overseas.
Brenda’s music covered many styles, including pop, Afropop, kwaito, R&B and it incorporated multiple South African languages (such as Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho, etc.). Her lyrics often reflected the struggles of township life and social injustice, and were socially and politically inspired, e.g. her song “Black President” (1990) which was a tribute to Nelson Mandela.
After she left “Brenda & The Big Dudes” in 1987, she followed a solo career, releasing her first album “Brenda” in 1987, and she continued issuing many albums up until 2004, with “Memeza” (1998) being especially successful, and being labelled as the best selling album in South Africa in that year.
On the morning of 26 April 2004, Brenda collapsed at her home in Buccleuch, Johannesburg, and was hospitalized after she fell into a coma, apparently due to a cocaine overdose which caused brain damage brought on by a lack of oxygen. She passed away on 9 May 2004, aged 39.
Brenda Fassie will always be affectionately known by her fans as MaBrrr, as well as by nicknames such as “Queen of African Pop” and “Madonna of the Townships”.
“The Big Dudes” started off as backing musicians for “Blondie & Pappa” before joining Brenda Fassie in 1983 to form “Brenda and the Big Dudes”, with the classic line-up being:

3. David Mabaso – bass
4. Rufus Klaas – guitar
5. Job “Fats” Mlangeni – drums

They also released a large number of singles between 1983 and 1987. The band broke up in 1987 when Brenda decided to follow a solo career, and although they initially continued as “The Big Dudes”, they eventually disbanded.
