Nick Taylor was born in Somerset, England, on 18 April 1944. When he was five years old, his parents moved to South Africa and settled in Cape Town. He began singing in his school choir at the age of 12 and subsequently decided to pursue a career in music. After completing his schooling at Bishops High Diocesan College, he enrolled at the University of Cape Town, where he studied drama and ballet.
In 1961, Taylor began working as a sound engineer at the Manley van Niekerk studios in Cape Town. Two years later he moved to Johannesburg to join the SABC (South African Broadcasting Corporation) as a radio DJ. During this period he also began his recording career, releasing several albums and 7-inch singles, including recordings in Afrikaans. He established himself as a versatile singer and entertainer, working in country, folk, pop and light entertainment.
Between 1967 and 1969 Taylor lived and worked in England, where he appeared regularly on television and performed in nightclubs. After returning to South Africa, he became involved in record production and established the Inhouse/Inhuis record label. The label's roster included several prominent South African artists, among them the iconic Afrikaans singers Koos du Plessis and Lucas Maree.
Taylor was also a songwriter and composer. In 1977 he won a SARIE Award for Song of the Year for “Make Her An Angel”, a hit for Roy Bulkin which reached No. 6 on the South African Top 20 and remained on the chart for eight weeks. He went on to write a number of successful stage musicals, including Christian and Rollercoaster, which were staged in theatres around South Africa.
His work extended beyond recording and theatre. Taylor wrote 39 episodes of the children's television programme Harry's House and composed numerous advertising jingles during his career. Over several decades he released more than 30 albums and numerous singles, while also working as a performer, songwriter, producer, broadcaster and television writer.
Nick Taylor's career has consequently encompassed many facets of the South African entertainment industry, from radio and television to record production, popular music and musical theatre. He and his family reside in Elandsbaai in the Western Cape.
