On a walk along Evanston’s South Boulevard beach, I noticed the fence partially down—and it stopped me in my tracks. Standing there, I couldn’t help but compare the openness without the fence to the separation it creates when intact. Without the fence, the beach looked so inviting, so welcoming—a place where anyone could enjoy the natural beauty that belongs to all of us.

Evanston says it wants to attract more people to experience our vibrant community and stunning lakefront, but barriers like these send a different message. They tell us we need to prove we belong. But this beach, this resource, is a gift from God, meant to be shared, not withheld.

It’s time to ask ourselves: Are we building a community that welcomes or one that divides?
