BREAKING: City of Madison crews moved in early Tuesday morning to clear a protest encampment at Williamson and Baldwin streets β the site established after the fatal July 22 police shooting of Corey Ruiz. At least 10 people have been arrested.
Crews and the Wisconsin State Patrol arrived around 4:45 a.m. and issued a warning to clear out at 5 a.m. Shortly after, fires were set near the intersection and rocks and other items were thrown at city workers, prompting a response from firefighters and officers in riot gear. Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway said the goal was to reopen the street, preserve the memorial, and end an occupation she called unsafe and unsustainable β adding that repeated calls to end it peacefully were ignored. The Wisconsin Department of Justice is investigating the shooting of Ruiz as a homicide, and four officers remain on administrative leave.
