AYYY I’m finally back from my hiatus 😎
A lot has been going on in life recently so I’ve been super busy! I didn’t want to take this big of a break from making videos, but I felt I had to in order to get back on track and keep making BANGERS for you guys 😤💜
Now, this is a song I have loved for way too long not to give it a remaster. I first heard this version of “Bowser’s Castle” when playing Mario Kart Wii when I was like, 11 years old 💀 I only played Bowser using the flame flyer and this was one of my favorite tracks. The music felt so eerie, it made Bowser seem scarier than he is usually depicted. I also played a lot of Mario 64 DS around this time and I remember the Bowser laugh scaring me HAHA. This song has such a strange composition to it though. The chromatic scale downwards on the main choir melody is just genius and that’s what REALLY sets the tone for this track. The section after with the haunting vocals rising in the background is a unique touch to this song, focusing heavily on the ambience. So while I was making this remaster, I thought that focusing heavy on the ambience was the way to go. And in some ways it was. But for the most part, I found myself working more on the composition of the song. Adding an intro, percussion variations, more instruments (like the piano and sitar, which have been used for MANY bowser themes before 👀), and the subtle bell tolls. The original is short and sweet, yet results in repetition. Repetition isn’t a bad thing per se, but context matters a ton when making music. Having a repeated melody, like this song has, can be detrimental because the melody IS SO GOOD! And when you have too much of a good thing, it can become a bad thing (in music specifically). So I changed up the main melody a bit to keep it fresh all throughout. The melody changes I made actually came to me while I was listening to a render of my remaster while on a walk. I could hear it in my head and I just KNEW I had to capitalize on it. And okay this description is getting SUPER long but I wanna talk about a couple more things…. THE GOD DANG BACKGROUND SYNTHS. I wanted to make this remaster sound like the original but just modernized. And in the original, the bass synth is one patch called “Rave” from the Roland SC-88. I found the original sample, and tried my best to recreate it. And honestly, I think I did a banging job 😤 I noticed that even tho it’s one patch, it’s made up of 2 notes. The bottom note is used for the bass supersaw synth, while the choir sounding pad plays the top AND bottom notes. It’s something that I don’t think a lot of VGM artists know because I’ve been listening to others MK64 Bowser Castle remasters and they usually don’t include the bottom note, and end up putting the bass synth on the top note. So…. Yeah just thought I’d point that out hahahah.
🎨🖌️ONE MORE THING! The art! 👀 I decided to draw Bowser on the go kart used in MK64, somewhat recreating one of the renders. I also gave this Bowser the same color palette as his old mid to late 90s era renders. I think it came out pretty sweet looking!
ANYWAYS GUYS!!!!! I hope you all enjoy and have an amazing day 💜 I will see you all soon for my next upload 😈 stay tuned….
