My Summary: A young rabbit named Chip has a question that he longs to know the answer to. His friends help him find his way to a different land that promises an adventure and an answer.
Positives
I love how the story is told. A narrator tells the story, and it feels very grandfatherly—witty, and a fantastic storyteller, spunky, and it has a way of telling just enough to make you want more. It feels personal and lighthearted but hints that the details carry deep meaning, but it never fully spells out the meaning, so you want to sit and ponder the words, not read too fast. More kids’ books need to be written this way. The voice alone is so engaging, immersive, and endearing.
The story has adventure, fun, friendship, and joy. It’s a happy story all the way through.
Chip and the characters are enjoyable, and their contrasts of sweet and snappy, innocent and knowledgeable, calm and flustered, and young and old make them all stand out and play off one another well.
The messages are subtle and well interwoven into the story yet clear, deep, and thoughtful. As I read, I found many details that made me stop, think, and wonder if they meant more. I loved how the two main messages were illustrated by places and scenes. It made me think about truth I already knew in a new way and made it all the more precious.
The narrator hints at more throughout the story about connected stories, so it made me curious about the connected stories, but it never gave them. The story didn’t need more, but it made me want more. It also made the world feel bigger.
Overall: An uplifting, adorable story with the perfect mix of fun and depth
