In this episode, we tackle one of the most important questions surrounding the Book of Mormon translation: Was it a tight translation or a loose translation?
Early witnesses of the translation process consistently described something remarkable. They said Joseph Smith placed a seer stone in a hat, and specific words appeared to him, which he then dictated to his scribe. If a word was written incorrectly, the next line would not appear until it was corrected. In other words, the translation was described as precise, controlled, and word-for-word.
But if that is the case, a serious problem emerges.
A tight translation should not sound like the language and writings circulating in Joseph Smith’s own time. Yet the Book of Mormon repeatedly echoes King James Bible language, and even parallels works like The Late War and The First Book of Napoleon, books written in Joseph Smith’s era that imitate biblical style.
So which is it?
If the translation was tight, then the wording should reflect the ancient authors who supposedly wrote on the plates. If it was loose, then the witnesses who described words appearing verbatim were mistaken. Either way, the explanation has consequences.
