What happens when a foundational religious claim runs straight into modern science?

In this episode of A Logical Deconstruction of Mormonism, we take a hard look at one of the clearest, testable claims in the Book of Mormon:
That Native Americans descend from a small group of Israelites who arrived around 600 BC.

For most of the Church’s history, this wasn’t symbolic. It was taught plainly and repeatedly. Native Americans were the principal ancestors of the Lamanites.

But then DNA entered the conversation.

And the results weren’t ambiguous.

Native American ancestry traces back to East Asia—not the Middle East. The expected Israelite genetic markers simply aren’t there.

So how is this explained?

Modern apologetics suggest a small Israelite group was absorbed into a much larger existing population, diluting their DNA beyond detection. But that raises a bigger issue:

👉 The Book of Mormon itself describes these groups becoming large, dominant civilizations
👉 It never clearly describes a massive preexisting population
👉 And the population growth in the text already strains credibility on its own

So now we’re left with a choice:

Is it more reasonable to insert an unmentioned civilization to make the data fit…
or recognize that the story itself may not reflect real history?

And DNA isn’t the only problem.

No Middle Eastern weapons.
No steel.
No Old World animals.
No Hebrew-based writing systems.
No archaeological footprint matching the narrative.

Not a single shard.

At some point, it stops being one missing piece—and starts looking like the entire puzzle was imagined.

This episode walks through the evidence, the shifting explanations, and the deeper question:

What do you do when reality doesn’t match the story?
