A Tampa Police Department officer and civilian will be honored for their heroic efforts in saving a man's life earlier this year during today's 2nd Quarter Awards ceremony.
The Life Saving Award will be presented to Officer Stephen Hiles.
On January 22, 2023, Ofc. Hiles responded to the area of Bayshore Blvd and S Carolina Ave for a report of an unresponsive male on the ground. Upon his arrival, he found Good Samaritans performing chest compressions and rescue breaths on the victim.
Recognizing the man was likely suffering from sudden cardiac arrest, Ofc. Hiles retrieved his agency-issued AED from his car. The AED administered electric shocks while the Good Samaritans continued chest compressions. Within minutes, the man had a strong pulse and was breathing on his own.
One of the Good Samaritans, Meghann Scholl, who works at Tampa General Hospital, will also be present for the ceremony and will be honored with the Citizen Appreciation Award.
