Often we see the science denial community try to claim things have to be exact or they aren't true. Be it folks still catching a disease after a 'jab' or lines to a sextant not being perfectly straight they claim there is no point in either. This is absurd and not how science and medicine works.

ps @NathanOakley1980 Just to make absolutely sure you see how silly your argument is, the angle to the star/sun is CORRECTED for refraction after it is measured using tables from the nautical almanac. Furthermore, the DIP CORRECTION also exactly corrects not only for the height above the water, but the refracted horizon. $Finding the Radius of the Earth with the Moon Youre Gonna Need R for That!!!. How often have we heard that from science deniers? In the last few months, Ive gone over a number of ways to determine the radius of the earth. 1/ The Method of Eratosthenes- This method uses the shadow cast by the sun at its zenith. Refraction is minimal, and by using three points we not only find the radius of the earth, we effectively rule out the flat earth. 2/ The Method of Al Biruni- By measuring the dip angle to the horizon from a known elevation, we can use basic trigonometry to find the radius of the earth. We do have an issue with refraction, but we still get the radius within 2-3% and we can correct for it. 3/ Great Circle Distances between known coordinates with confirmation of the actual distance between those points. With this we rule out the possibility of a flat earth and confirm the radius of the earth. In this video we introduce two new methods: 4/ Aristarchus of Samos worked out the geometry to use common observations (specifically observations of the lunar eclipse and the angular size of the full moon) to determine the distance to the moon in terms of the radius of the earth and the size of the earth in terms of the size of the moon. By solving these values with radar, laser and parallax determinations of the distance to the moon, we can determine the size (radius of the sphere) of the earth. 5/ Keplers Third Law- by using the distance and period of the orbit of the moon and the period and the altitude of the orbit of the ISS. Subtracting the 400km altitude of the ISS from the resulting radius of the orbit of the ISS we can determine the radius of the earth. Note, at the end of the video, I have the orbital distance to the moon for all dates in 2022. You can do the math yourself for practice.
