New research from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) has found a sharp decline in blue whale songs. Over six years of acoustic monitoring, researchers discovered that vocalizations have decreased as the whales' food sources, mainly krill, have vanished.
The recordings began during an unprecedented marine heatwave, which dramatically reduced krill populations. As the krill disappeared, so did the songs.
