Blonde Redhead sat down with us to reflect on the excitement surrounding their early days thirty years ago and to talk about where they are today.
Since their formation in New York in 1993, Blonde Redhead could have fallen apart a thousand times. Fortunately, they survived thanks to the resilience of singer-guitarist Kazu Makino and twin brothers Amadeo (vocals, guitar) and Simone Pace (drums). Now, the atypical trio have returned to the top with their 2023 album Sit Down For Dinner—one of their best albums to date. This miracle came nine years after their previous album Barragán (2014) and Kazu Makino’s solo record (kazu, 2019), and may constitute the epilogue to a very unusual career.
Though they come from different places (the Pace brothers were born in Milan and grew up in Montreal, Makino is from Tokyo), the three artists formed and developed their music in New York. They follow in the footsteps of Sonic Youth with a brutalist rock sound that has evolved into delicate and melodic shoegaze odes over the course of their discography. Ten albums have been released so far on four renowned labels: first Smells Like Records, founded by Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley; then the Chicago punk label Touch and Go, home to Shellac; followed by the iconic 4AD; and today, Partisan.
In an interview with us, the trio reflected on the past and spoke frankly about where they stand today.
