Born on the outskirts of Stuttgart, Germany, in 1985, Danilo Plessow began his musical adventures at the tender age of six, playing the drums in the school big band, going on to produce his own music only a couple of years later. His first project, "Inverse Cinematics,“ formed together with Joachim Tobias, would end up getting noticed by the likes of Gilles Peterson and being featured on one of the first Fabric compilations, before Danilo had ever set foot in a nightclub himself. In high school, he booked his first international gigs and started his lifelong passion for record collecting. His best-known project, "Motor City Drum Ensemble,“ took the House scene by storm, ushering in a resurgence of sample-heavy deep house that defined the early 2010s. At the same time, his DJ sets became increasingly adventurous and gained him a reputation on the circuit, leading to several heavy compilations such as DJ Kicks from 2010, Dekmantel Selectors in 2018, and Fabric Records in 2022. In 2019, Danilo started his next adventure as engineer, producer, and co-owner of Space Grapes Records.
What began as an experiment with former flatmate Bobby van Putten and his band "Another Taste,“ trying to reimagine the sonic textures of the 70s and 80s, has led to an obsession with tape machines, microphone techniques, and forgotten studio gear. The project now includes several other bands, and with the 12th release on the horizon, the label has already left its mark on the scene, with the bands also touring internationally. Danilo continues to search for new musical adventures and keeps a very busy DJ schedule, while collecting, playing, and obsessing over vinyl records like in the early 2000s.
A rare interviewee, the erudite German DJ and producer sat down at length with us before his appearance at Radio Meuh Circus Festival 2025 to decipher his trajectory and tell us what his relationship with music reveals about him.
