This should be enough clay for the first small round of tests I want to do with this new mix. The darker clay should fire completely black by itself, yet despite being labelled as ‘smooth’, it’s still pretty toothy and needs to be blended down by 50%, for which I’m using my usual, high-iron stoneware clay body that’s much smoother.
This is the technique I’ve always using for blending bodies. I cut very thin layers and sandwich them altogether, then the entire mass is given a quick spiral wedge to fully mix the two. No marbling here thanks, I can’t see it fitting within my more minimal family of forms and glazes.
I’ll be creating some lidded jars with this lot, in fact that’s the subject of my YouTube video that I’m currently editing for the coming Sunday. What I’ve found really intriguing is how much of a difference this new black clay makes, the combined clay is absurdly brittle, to the point where if the thrown leather hard pots are very gently squeezed, (say the opening of a jar is no longer round), it’s just crack. There’s no give to it, which is a bit of a shock as compared to normal stoneware that tends to be rather forgiving.
