In this Blender tutorial (I use version 2.90 but you can use 2.8x as well) I show how to attach a rigged weapon to a character rig (to the hand bone).
I dont parent it, because I want the weapon to be a separate model, so I use a Child-Of constraint for this tasks. after that I can animate the model with the weapon following the hand on roating or moving.
