Scene in Las Vegas — Meeting Kai and Decard. Thirty years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, a new Blade Runner, L.A.P.D. Officer "K" (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos. K's discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former L.A.P.D. Blade Runner, who has been missing for thirty years. Blade Runner 2049' is the Best Cyberpunk Film Since

An important metric, as a self-proclaimed cyberpunk, is that the film would be true to the essence of thegenre cyberpunk. Blade Runner 2049 more than simply displaying the trappings of cyberpunk aesthetics, is cyberpunk on the nose, but more than that, it is a matured and an evolved form of the genre cyberpunk. Visually, the movie is brought up to date, but not at the expense of narrative. The visuals are true to modern cyberpunk visual style, but also hold meaning within the story itself.

Las Vegas was a city in the state of Nevada, United States. Sometime before 2049, it became uninhabitable due to a dirty bomb going off and dousing the city with harmful radiation.

The Las Vegas of 2049 retained much of its earlier appearance before a dirty bomb forced all living things to vacate the city. Classic Las Vegas landmarks such as the copies of the Pyramids and the Eiffel Tower were surrounded by newer architecture. Like Los Angeles, the streets moved vertically, where the poor and homeless lived at the "basement" of the city, while those who could afford it stayed higher up.

In the time between the 2022's Blackout and 2049, ex-Blade Runner Rick Deckard moved into Las Vegas to live in seclusion after working with Freysa and the replicant resistance movement to hide the child he had with Rachael. At some point, he acquired a dog.

Following K's discovery of Deckard in Las Vegas, Deckard justified this decision to live as a recluse with keeping his daughter safe and free of persecution, revealing: "We were being hunted."

The lights in deserted Las Vegas are the glow of radioactive fallout in Blade Runner 2049. "That dirty bomb generated a strong amount of radiation, but it doesn’t destroy the infrastructure," says Villeneuve.

The trail eventually leads K out of the dark and rainswept LA to the virulently orange glare of what’s left of ‘Las Vegas’ after its destruction by a ‘dirty’ bomb.

The remnants of the city are scale models designed by Syd Mead, the man who was responsible for the legendary miniatures used in the Ridley Scott film. Oddly, this is overall Production Designer Dennis Gassner’s third bite of the cherry at re-imagining Las Vegas.

There’s another practical location for the kitschy interior of the old-school 'Vegas' casino where K finally catches up with Deckard (Harrison Ford). It's Budapest’s old Stock Exchange Palace which occupies the entire block on the western edge of Szabadság tér (Freedom Square).

Only Second Unit aerial shots were filmed outside Hungary. The the favelas of Mexico City provided the densely packed city and the Valley of Fire in Nevada, the blasted outskirts of Vegas.

In this sci fi movie the story opens in 2049, thirty years after the events of the first film. An on-screen text states that the Tyrell Corporation has collapsed decades before, in the wake of violent revolts involving their Nexus-6 through -8 Replicants, forcing the company into bankruptcy. After the world's ecosystems collapsed in the mid 2020s, famine swept the Earth, killing millions. With his invention of synthetic farming, a wealthy businessman named Niander Wallace (Jared Leto) ended food shortages and acquired Tyrell's remaining assets to form his own corporation. The Wallace Company has reinvigorated the Replicant industry by mass producing the Nexus-9 Replicants, a new generation of artificial humans with modified behavior to make them more obedient than the older models. These Replicants have implanted memories and open-ended lifespans, and are still used for slave labor on the off-world colonies (the Moon, Mars, and the moons of Jupiter, Saturn, etc.), but some are also used as Blade Runner units, hunting down and "retiring" the few remaining older model Replicants that are still at large.
