A Black Stink Bug (Proxys punctulatus) flashes its wings while hanging out on the exterior wall of the visitor center at Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge, in Colorado County, TX, USA. The Stink Bug is omnivorous and so can use its proboscis to deliver a painful bite. So I think the wing flashing is a signal to potential predators to stay away. (It never actually seemed to try to fly away.)
I think it's interesting also that it seems to see a Spider exoskeleton and seems to purposely go around it. I wonder if that's because it's wary of Spiders? Or does it just want to avoid sticky webs?
