Black Sea grain exports have slowed sharply after strikes on Russian and Ukrainian ports left vessel owners unwilling to dock and load.

Bertrand Oesterle, Vice President of Clearing and Execution Sales at StoneX Financial Ltd, explains why the damage now looks less like a logistics problem and more like a production one.

Damage at Novorossiysk, the largest deep sea port in Russia, has left grain stranded inland while Ukraine scrambles for temporary storage. Farmgate prices have collapsed on absent demand, raising the question of whether some Russian wheat gets cut at all. Heat waves have also cut European Union maize and wheat estimates, while record low water on the Rhine and the Danube has halted barge freight.
