A new U.S. Gulf phosphate plant from Morocco's OCP would add 1.2 million tons of DAP and MAP a year, supply the market has lacked since 2021.
Josh Linville, StoneX VP of Fertilizer, breaks down how the plant gets built, what it changes for North American supply, and where the pressure sits across the rest of the fertilizer complex.
The plant is designed around phosphoric acid, which sits outside the countervailing duties applied to Moroccan and Russian phosphate rock in 2021, and construction alone runs years before the first ton moves. Meanwhile a hard grain rally has reset the value equation across urea, UAN, anhydrous, phosphate, and potash, with potash sitting in the bottom decile of its range against corn. Blocked vessel traffic around the Strait of Hormuz, European nitrogen production running about 75% of normal, and threatened tariffs on Canadian potash are the flashpoints shaping supply from here.
