Black Hole—Neutron Star Binaries in LISA

Black hole-neutron star (BH-NS) binaries are potentially observable during their inspiral phase with the planned space-based gravitational-wave detector LISA. The detection of BH-NS binaries with LISA will be critical for refining our predictions of their formation rate and properties, as well as teaching us about massive star evolution and the star formation history of our Milky Way. In this talk I will present binary population synthesis of BH-NS binaries and present predictions of their merger rate and merger characteristics that will be detected by LISA. I will discuss that, in principle, BHNSs could be detected from galaxies as far as away as the Andromeda Galaxy and that up to 7 sources might be detected over a 10 year LISA mission. I will discuss the effect of birth metallicity and star formation history on the BH-NS population, and how in turn, LISA detections might help in refining models of massive binary evolution and star formation history.
