following up on h-mart gate. this came out before Ed dropped his apology. Korean Vegan is still on the clock as of publication.
in summary: in september, a content creator named Madeline, who is wasian, made a lighthearted video about side-eyeing White people in Asian grocery stores, telling a story about side-eyeing a fellow Wasian by accident. she was clearly encouraging White people to go to Asian grocery stores and being self-deprecating, but three elder Asian content creators with large platforms took her words completely out of context, misrepresented the content of her video two months later, and portrayed her as encouraging segregation against non-Asian people, leading to Madeline being harassed by primarily White people for a month, to White folks uploading videos trolling at H-Marts and other Asian grocery stores, and to Madeline allegedly being doxxed.
the Black diaspora immediately resonated with Madeline's perspective and defended her against this early flood of hate comments, and this prompted a reckoning for the creators that jumped her, as well as deeper online conversation among Asian creators about how anti-Blackness fuels self-hate within assimilationist Asians.

quick note about the title: i know that the Asian American movement was grounded in solidarity with and inspiration from Black Americans. and many Asian folks have learned from Black folks over the years about how to stand against anti-Blackness, and how this gives us tools for fighting against their own oppression as well. but far too many Asians have not learned that lesson. that is why it is important to highlight these conversations!
