previously titled: Americans: Maybe don’t move to Canada. focused on deeper issues with our northern neighbors, as well as the practical realities of moving there. long story short: much like our conversation about europe, canada is not a “safe haven” of “civilized people,” it is another imperial western state. leaving the US for a while to visit, or getting student or work visas, are always practical. but remember that moving is really really hard, and it cannot be a decision made out of panic. there are many communities to fight for, organizations to work with, and cities/states that offer protection for the marginalized in the US. if you need to move somewhere, those are the places to look for first
