Females bears are called Sows or she-bear.
Bears have two layers of fur. A short layer of fur that keeps the bear warm. The second is a layer of long guard hairs that keeps water away from short fur and skin of the bear.
Unlike many mammals, bears can see in color.
Bears are solitary animals . The only time males and females get together is in June when they mate.
Every fall black bears eat ravenously. So they can put enough fat to last through the winter denning time. They can spend 20 hours a day eating and they will put up to 100 pounds on in just a few weeks.
